About Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Company NJHPC
The Neelum Jhelum Hydropower Plant in Azad Kashmir diverts the water of the Neelum River into the Jhelum River to generate electricity. The plant has an installed capacity of 969 MW and is located 42 km south of Muzaffarabad. Construction began in 2008 after the contract was awarded to a Chinese consortium in July 2007.
The plant exceeded its capacity on rare occasions reaching 1040 MW of output. Neelum Jhelum Dam closed on 6 July 2022 due to a crack in the tail race tunnel. Power generation resumed on 9 August 2023 after the rehabilitation work on the tunnel was completed.
