History of Nishtar Medical University
The idea of establishing an institution of medical education in Multan was first proposed by Dr. Muhammad Jamal Bhatta in 1945. At that time there was only one medical college in Punjab, named King Edward Medical College in Lahore.
After the birth of Pakistan on August 14, 1947, Hindu doctors migrated to India. More doctors were needed to take care of people’s health. The Punjab government has decided to build a new medical college and hospital in Multan.
On December 31, 1950, Governor Punjab announced the establishment of a medical college and hospital on behalf of the Punjab government in a public meeting held at Bagh Lehange Khan, adjacent to Civil Hospital Multan. It was named Nishtar Medical College and Hospital in honour of Sardar Abdul Rab Nishtar.
